I didn’t build Mood Refresh because I wanted to replace interior designers. I built it because I’ve spent my career running a commercial interior design business – and I could see where the industry was headed.
I’m not a formally trained interior designer. My expertise comes from years of leading design teams, managing refresh budgets, overseeing procurement, and watching how decisions play out at scale across real properties. That vantage point gives you a very clear view of what works, what doesn’t, and where the friction lives.
Two things became impossible to ignore.
First: AI is not optional.
Second: refresh budgets are shrinking while expectations keep rising.
Mood Refresh lives right at the intersection of those realities.
The Inevitable Reality of AI in Design
Whether the industry is ready or not, AI is becoming part of interior design. Clients are already interacting with tools that promise instant answers, faster timelines, and fewer meetings. Speed is no longer a bonus – it’s the baseline.
I didn’t want Mood to be reactive to that shift. I wanted us to be ahead of it, using technology in a way that supports good decision-making instead of replacing it.
AI on its own doesn’t understand scale, durability, lead times, pricing volatility, or what actually works in real spaces. But when it’s paired with real design logic and operational experience, it becomes a meaningful tool. Mood Refresh is my way of saying: let’s use AI intentionally, not defensively.
The Reality of Refresh Projects Today
The second driver was much more practical.
Over the last few years, we’ve watched:
- Product pricing increase – sometimes overnight
- Lead times stretch unpredictably
- Refresh budgets get tighter
- Owners and operators still expect spaces to feel intentional, current, and competitive
At the same time, not every refresh warrants full design firm engagement. That doesn’t mean those projects don’t deserve good design – it means the traditional model isn’t always the right fit.
I found myself asking the same question over and over:
How do we give clients real design support without forcing them into a scope they don’t need – or a fee structure that doesn’t make sense?.
Intelligent Ecommerce, Built for Decision-Making
This is where my interest in intelligent ecommerce really took shape.
Most ecommerce experiences overwhelm users with options and leave them to sort it out alone. That’s especially risky in furniture sourcing, where one wrong decision can derail a budget or delay a project.
Mood Refresh works differently.
Instead of starting with products, it starts with guided decisions:
- Commercial or Residential
- Space type
- Budget range
- Style direction
- Functional priorities
From there, the platform delivers a Furniture Vision Board built with products sourced from to-the-trade vendors – the same caliber of vendors our design teams use every day.
This isn’t an open marketplace. It’s a curated ecosystem, shaped by real design and refresh experience.
Why We Chose to Gamify the Experience
One of the most intentional choices we made was to gamify the process.
Design decision-making can feel intimidating – especially for non-designers. Long forms, static questionnaires, and dense specs create friction and fatigue. We wanted the experience to feel intuitive, interactive, and even a little fun – without losing credibility.
Mood Refresh uses:
- Short, quiz-style prompts
- Interactive decision paths
- AI-driven “characters” that guide users through the process
Those characters represent the collective expertise of our team – translated into a format that feels approachable rather than overwhelming. The result is a process that encourages momentum, reduces second-guessing, and keeps users engaged from start to finish.
The goal wasn’t entertainment for entertainment’s sake.
It was clarity through interaction.

Giving Clients Agency – Without Leaving Them Alone
One of the most important goals of Mood Refresh was agency.
Clients told us they wanted:
- More control
- Faster timelines
- Budget clarity
- Less back-and-forth
But they didn’t want to be left on their own.
Mood Refresh allows clients to move forward confidently – building a refresh design that feels cohesive and intentional, without the expense or complexity of engaging a full design team.
And when they do want deeper support? Mood Interior Designs is still there.
This isn’t about replacing designers. It’s about right-sizing design services to match the project.
Built From the Refresh Business – Not Around It
Mood Refresh wasn’t built in a vacuum. It was built on years of real refresh work:
- Multifamily | Student housing
- Hospitality
- Common areas
- Quick-turn projects with budget constraints
Every rule, recommendation, and product category reflects how refresh projects actually work – not how they look in a catalog.
That grounding is what makes the platform credible.
Why We Didn’t Build Another Design Marketplace
We didn’t build Mood Refresh to be another design marketplace because marketplaces prioritize volume and choice – not decision-making. Most platforms hand users thousands of products and call it flexibility, when in reality it creates overwhelm, inconsistency, and risk. Mood Refresh is intentionally constrained. Every product, rule, and recommendation exists because it works in real refresh scenarios. The value isn’t in endless options – it’s in guided clarity, budget alignment, and outcomes clients can actually execute.
Looking Ahead
Mood Refresh is a tool – but it’s also a shift in how we think about design access.
Design doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing.
Technology doesn’t have to be impersonal.
And AI doesn’t have to erase expertise – it can extend it.
I built Mood Refresh to meet clients where they are today, while preparing our business and our industry for what’s next.
If you’re navigating a refresh and want clarity, speed, and confidence – Mood Refresh was built for you.
